Quick tax math: add tax, remove tax, and tax amount.
The Sales Tax / VAT Calculator helps you add or remove a tax percentage from a price, and also tells you how much tax is included.
It’s useful for VAT‑inclusive pricing, invoices, checkout totals, and quickly verifying tax calculations.
Both are percentage-based taxes on purchases. Sales tax is often added at checkout, while VAT is commonly shown as already included in the displayed price.
This calculator works the same way for both: add a percent to get the total, or remove a percent to get the pre‑tax price.
Pre‑tax price = total ÷ (1 + tax/100).
Example: total 107 with 7% tax → 107 ÷ 1.07 = 100.
First compute the pre‑tax price using “Remove tax”, then subtract it from the total.
Tax portion = total − (total ÷ (1 + tax/100)).
If the taxes are simply added together, you can usually combine them into one rate (e.g., 5% + 2% = 7%).
If they apply sequentially (rare), you’d multiply the factors: (1+tax1)×(1+tax2).
Rounding rules vary. Some systems calculate tax per line item and round each line, then sum. Others sum first, then calculate tax once.
No. It applies only a percentage tax to the amount you enter. If your checkout includes fees or shipping that are taxable, include them in the amount.
It depends on local custom and venue policy. If you want to tip on the tax‑inclusive total, calculate “Total with tax” here, then use that number in the Tip Calculator.
If the tax rate is 0%, the total and pre‑tax amounts are the same, and the tax amount is 0.
